What is an integration platform?

An integration platform seamlessly allows for unified and secure data exchange and process automation across independent applications and systems, no matter if they are on premises or in the cloud, if they are purely virtual or if they have a hardware component, and no matter if they belong to your organization or your partners and clients.

How to integrate APIs and systems incorrectly?

Let's start with the opposite of what we would actually like to achieve: how to integrate incorrectly? The surest way to incorrect systems integrations is to connect them directly, one-to-one, in a point-to-point manner.

It does not matter if it is individual API endpoints or entire systems that are connected. As long as it is point-to-point, the inevitable result is this:

  1. You think in terms of connecting two or more specific, named systems. For instance, you connect "MyDay" and "BillingCloud" rather than considering it in higher-level terms of connecting HR and billing business functions, no matter what systems they use today.
  2. Your systems invoke each other directly. If a system has an API, another system will use it directly whenever it needs something, with little to no coordination, oversight and governance.
  3. You may have a thin layer of API endpoints, each of which connects two or more systems, but these endpoints only map data from one system to another directly, which effectively means point-to-point mappings, just in a different place of your architecture, hence point-to-point integrations again.
  4. The responsibility for the coordination of business process logic is vaguely defined, if at all. When messages in a process are exchanged, it is difficult to trace them and know what should happen to them depending on where in the process they are.
  5. Decisions about how to integrate with other systems are made by vendors of specific products being integrated, even though it is not clear if they have integration skills in addition to the skills needed to build their core products, and whether they grasp the whole picture of your business.
  6. Your business suffers because vendors of your systems are clearly inflexible in, or incapable of, integrating with other systems yet you can do little about it because the integration logic is deeply embedded in their products.
  7. You feel that building new integrations by vendors of your systems should take at most days, from inception to production, but you wait months or years for what really should be a simple job.
  8. You tried to automate various business processes, perhaps more than once, but you always felt you needed a more flexible tool.
  9. Your business people have learned to put up with the lack of automation. "It just cannot be had". This has been going on for years and you would like to change it.


Yes, it feels natural to just start invoking REST APIs. This is what they are for, after all. But if you do it point-to-point, you are setting up yourself on a course to unnecessary complexity.

1. API ossification
  • Closely tying two systems which makes an integration essentially untouchable, any changes must always be minutely coordinated, even though the systems may be delivered by different vendors using different models, e.g. one is a generic cloud offer, the other is a purpose-built one.
  • The end result is that it is better never to change an API because that may result in unwanted, cascading effects that are difficult to foresee.
2. Strain on people
  • Increased workload - managing numerous point-to-point integrations can easily overwhelm people involved while diverting them from projects and initiatives that are truly important.
  • Stress and burnout - the complexity and constant upkeep of too many integration touchpoints leads to higher stress and frustration levels, dampening team morale and leading to higher turnover rates.
  • Training demands - much more extensive training is needed by new team members to appreciate the brittle nature of point-to-point integrations.
  • Lack of career growth - since so much time is spent on putting out fires in what are effectively integration silos, people do not build their skills to the best of their abilities, which quickly begins to limit their career choices.
  • Talent retention difficulties - the best people will not stay for very long in a place that intrinsically limits innovation and which will feel monotonous. If they perceive their skills are not being utilized effectively, you will quickly lose your best.
3. Lack of scalability and reusability
  • Tightly-coupled systems lead to a web of complex and unmanageable connections that rule out their reusability, making it unnecessarily difficult to add or replace elements in your architecture.
  • The rigidity of point-to-point integrations negatively affects your ability to swiftly react to market changes or new business requirements - it is hard to know what, and why, will break if one part of the connected systems is changed.
  • Data inconsistencies are introduced if multiple versions of the same data are handled slightly differently in each independent point-to-point integration, making it more difficult to track, coordinate and execute business-wide data governance standards.
  • Maintenance challenges are frequent when upgrading one part of the integrated system leads to unwanted repercussions in seemingly distant and unrelated parts that depend on what is being upgraded in ways that are never clearly expressed.
